Aeonium

Aeonium is a genus of about 35 species, mainly native to the Canary Islands. Most form a small shrub of multiple waxy rosettes on a basal stem. The leaves of many species have attractive variations. Flowers star-shaped and typically yellow, borne on mature plants in pyramid shaped clusters at the end of the stems. Most are autumn/winter growers. Excellent for mass planting.

‘Tree Aeonium’. Height to 1m. Rosettes to 20cm wide. Bright green leaves tinged with red when grown in the spring sun. Cream/yellow conical flower heads in Spring. (Morocco). Sun/part sun.

‘Black Rose’. Deep maroon to black leaves form shiny rosettes clustered on grey-brown stems. The bright yellow pyramid-shaped flower heads contrast strikingly with the dark leaves. Height to 1m. Sun/part sun.

An unusual low growing succulent to 30cm that forms a dense hemispherical mound of congested whorls of greyish-green hairy much varied leaves, edged in white. Height to 20cm. (Africa). Sun/part sun.

‘Pin-Wheel’. Height to 20cm. Rosettes of grey-green leaves with sculpted leaf margins edged in pink when grown in the sun. Pale pink/yellow pyramid-shaped flower heads in Spring. (Canary Islands). Sun/part sun.

A pretty species to 50cm high. Strongly variegated lemon/green leaves in Smallish rosettes. Sculpted leaf margins have strongly defined pink margins. Pink flowers in spring. (Canary Islands). Sun/part sun.

Aeonium sedifolium

A rare multi-branching dwarf species very like a sedum (hence its name). The small glossy green leaves are covered in red stripes. Sun /part sun.

Aeonium tabuliforme

‘Green Platters’ or 'Dinner Plate'. This stemless species bears a totally flat rosette to 30cm wide, with leaves often variegated in lemon/green. Yellow flowers in spring. (Canary Islands). Part sun / light shade.
