Sempervivum

Sempervivum

Sempervivums are hardy succulents native to the mountainous regions of central and southern Europe and some Mediterranean islands, traditionally grown on roofs to protect against storms and sorcery. In Nordic mythology they were considered sacred with the flower said to resemble the beard of God. There are around 50 species and a myriad of cultivars with a wide range of rosette sizes, forms and colours. Their flowers are star-shaped typically pink or red, sometimes pale yellow.

CULTIVATION TIPS
Spring / summer growers. Sempervivums prefer filtered sun, or part sun. Protect them from excessive sunlight in summer. They require reasonable water during the warmer months but keep them drier in winter. When grown outdoors they will spread through narrow crevices making them excellent for wall planting.
