Native to Central and South America this unique genus when young is globular and ribbed with areoles then after some years the body stops growing and the cephalium appears which gives it the common name of Turk's Cap. The cephalium continues to grow, flowering regularly in a ring at the top. These are mostly red, but a few are white.
Full sun or part shade, water sparingly and allow to dry completely between waterings. Height to 20cm.
